LDAP Address Book Setup

This setup guide gives you instructions for configuring several popular Email client software to search and obtain address book iformation from the SoC LDAP server. This address book contains information on all SoC UNIX account users.

Configuring Netscape Messenger

  1. Start Netscape Communicator or Netscape Messenger.
  2. Goto the menu bar, select Communicator -> Address Books.
  3. In the Address Book, goto the menu bar, select File -> New Directory.
  4. Enter the following information:
    Description:SoC Address Book
    LDAP Server:ldap.comp.nus.edu.sg
    Search Root:dc=comp, dc=nus, dc=edu, dc=sg
  5. Click OK.
  6. Goto the menu bar, select Edit -> Preferences.
  7. Expand the Mail & Newsgroups item on the left panel, then select Addressing.
  8. On the right panel, check the Directory Server box and select "SoC Address Book" in the drop-down list next to it.
  9. Click OK.

When you compose new email, as you begin typing the recipient's real name or email address, Netscape Messenger will attempt to complete the full email address for you.

Configuring Outlook Express

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. Goto the menu bar, select Tools -> Accounts.
  3. Click Add -> Directory Service.
  4. For the Internet directory (LDAP) server, type: ldap.comp.nus.edu.sg.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Click Yes, then Next.
  7. Click Finish.
  8. Double-click on the new entry for ldap.comp.nus.edu.sg.
  9. Change the name to SoC Address Book. This is just to give this entry a more recognizable name.
  10. Click on the Advanced tab.
  11. Change the "Search base" to: dc=comp, dc=nus, dc=edu, dc=sg
  12. Click OK.

When you compose new email, you can press ^K while typing the recipient's real name or email address to see a list of matching entries or auto-complete the full entry if there is only one possible match.

Configuring Pine

Pine from around version 4.44 supports LDAP address books. Red Hat 7.2 with the latest security updates includes Pine version 4.44.

  1. Start Pine.
  2. In the main menu, select Setup, then Directory.
  3. Add a new directory.
  4. Set ldap-server to: ldap.comp.nus.edu.sg.
  5. Set search-base to: dc=comp, dc=nus, dc=edu, dc=sg.
  6. Set nickname to: SoC Address Book.
  7. Optionally, set search-type to: name-or-email. This may help to speed up address book searches.
  8. Set search-rule to: contains.
  9. Choose Exit, then Yes to commit changes.
  10. Exit the setup mode.

When you compose new email, press ^T to add an address book entry. Select "SoC Address Book" and type a search string.

Configuring GQ

GQ is a Gtk-based LDAP client. It is not an email application, but a standalone LDAP browser. More information about GQ is available at http://biot.com/gq/.

  1. Start GQ.
  2. Goto File, Preferences.
  3. Click on the Servers tab, then click New.
  4. Enter a descriptive name for this server. E.g., "SoC Address Book".
  5. In LDAP host, enter ldap.comp.nus.edu.sg.
  6. In Base DN, enter dc=comp, dc=nus, dc=edu, dc=sg.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click OK.

To search, under the Search tab, enter a search text in the first textbox, select the correct server in the next, then click Find.


Note: You can also get directory information via the finger service on finger.comp.nus.edu.sg.
