- Is there a guide to give me a jump start on the networking and computing
facilities in SoC?

This guide has been designed to give new users to SoC a quick orientation of
the network and related computing facilities in SoC and NUS.
- How do I connect to the network?
There are several access methods, depending on how you want to connect and
from where you want to connect. Check out https://noc.comp.nus.edu.sg/networkaccess for more
info.
- Where and how do I get a wireless network card?
In order to help manage the high demand for wireless network cards, you will
first need to reserve the card online at
https://noc.comp.nus.edu.sg/user/wireless-loan.html.
You will be notified via email when a card is available. You can then pick up
your wireless network card from SoC helpdesk.
- I have loaned a wireless network card, where can I check the due date?
Here: https://noc.comp.nus.edu.sg/user/loans.html. Same for any other network equipment loaned
through the NOC.
- I have a network problem with my computer. Where can I get help?
First, please check our guide to network
troubleshooting. This will eleminate trivial problems and most issues
that you can resolve on your own. If it does not help, please contact SoC
helpdesk.
- My network access is slow or erratic. What is wrong?
We have a checklist for problems with
slow or erratic network access. This is often a very fuzzy problem to
diagnose particularly because problem reports tend to be vague and
inaccurate. You will be helping us to help you if you provide us with a clear
problem report.
- My computer has been administratively disabled. What should I do now?

- My Windows computer has been infected by a virus. What should I do?

- Where can I check the status of my computers in SoC and/or the list of
security problems?

Note that this applies only for computers connected to SoC Internal networks
or DMZ networks; Computers connected to SoC PnP, SPnP and wireless networks
do not need registration and are not listed here.
- I just registered my network access/DNS hostname/change of MAC address, etc.
Why does it not work yet? How long must I wait?
As a rule of thumb, changes in NOC are pushed to the network and take effect
in about 1 hour. Please wait patiently.
- Windows complains about a conflict in my computer name. Please help!
We cannot prevent other network users from configuring the same computer
name in their Windows system. If you have problems, just change your
computer name to something else. As far as SoC network is concerned, your
system is still known by its officially registered name.
- The DNS hostname for my computer does not resolve correctly. What is wrong?
If your computer is configured via DHCP, please check
DDNS Name Resolution Problems.
- How can I deregister my unused computers?
At the My Computers page, there is a deregister
link against every system under you. Click and follow the link to
deregister that corresponding system.
- How do I... use dialup? VPN? SPnP? Xwin32?

- What about matters regarding NUS-VPN?
NUS-VPN is a service provided by NUS Computer Centre. Please contact
Computer Centre helpdesk directly regarding any matters on NUS-VPN. There
is a NUS-VPN webpage at:

- I've connected to a SoC PnP network point but cannot access the SoC PnP login page using Internet Explorer!
Check that you have configured your computer to use DHCP. Next, check the version of your Internet Explorer, it must be at least 5.5 and above in order to access the SoC PnP login page. If you have an older version of Internet Explorer, kindly upgrade it and try again.
- I get a warning about unrecognized/unverified site certificate while
accessing NOC website. Is this a problem?
No. The NOC website (as well as several other websites in SoC) uses an
self-generated self-signed certificate. If you are concerned about the
authenticity of this certificate, please check:

- What are the security risks with moving from the Staff Network to the
Research Network?

- How to join my computer to NUSSTU or NUSSTF domain?
Go to http://helpdesk.nus.edu.sg/support/user/.
Click on "e-FAQs". Type: join domain.
Click Search, then click on "Join Computer Name to NUS domain" and follow
the instructions there.
- What is PGP? GnuPG?

- Can I choose my Email Address in SoC?
You certainly can, using MySoC.Net's permanent email address which stays
with you even after you graduate. You can forward emails to anywhere
you like. [ more info ]
- What is an IP Telephone? What is it used for?
An IP telephone is a telephone that connects into an IP network instead of
a traditional telephone line (also known as POTS or Plain Old Telephone
System). It is used just like a normal telephone. There is more IP

- Where is the SoC Technical Services?
COM1 Level 1. You can also send email to
techsvc@comp.nus.edu.sg.
- Help, I can't login to the NOC web site!
First, make sure your browser supports and allows
cookies. You must login using your SoC
account userid and password. Some accounts are disallowed access to NOC; As
a rule of thumb, if you can use SoC dialup, then you should be able to
login to the NOC web site.
- What is the NOC?
NOC is the abbreviation for Network Operations Centre. In general, the term
NOC refers to the organisational unit responsible for operating
and maintaining a network. The NOC Web in SoC is your personalised portal
to everything networked in SoC.
